Admiral William "Bull" Halsey relieved Admiral Fletcher in 1942 to become the leader of the Island Hopping Campaign. Interestingly Fletcher saved Halsey's reputation after Halsey left to chase the larger Japanese fleet and left the door open for disaster to the troops landing on the Phillipines. Fletcher had only a small fleet of "Jeep" air craft carriers to oppose a large Japanese fleet, which he did causing it to turn back.
